A Joyful elopement at twin lakes, colorado - jill & Con

Jill and Con’s Twin Lakes elopement in Buena Vista, Colorado was intentional, and deeply personal and full of the kind of joy only these moments can provide. Set in late September at the peak of Colorado’s stunning fall colors, their day unfolded between the riverside charm of the Surf Hotel in the town of Buena Vista, Colorado and a secluded mountain overlook near Independence Pass by Twin Lakes. With handwritten vows, golden aspens, and a celebration that felt more like a gathering of friends than a traditional wedding, their elopement was rooted in connection, music, and the beauty of starting fresh.

Why They Chose to Elope in Twin Lakes & Buena Vista

Jill and Con weren’t looking for tradition when they reached out about eloping, they were looking for something that felt like them.

After meeting during the stillness of the pandemic and realizing almost immediately that what they had was something lasting, their relationship grew from a place of depth, conversation, and shared rhythm.

Music and mountains shaped their connection.

From Brit pop to long hikes in Colorado’s high country, their world was built on the things in life they that brought them joy and love.

When we met them the year before in Buena Vista, sitting on a rooftop patio and talking through ideas, it became clear that their elopement needed to feel like an extension of their life together.

Twin Lakes gave them that.

Getting Ready at the Surf Hotel

The morning began slowly at the Surf Hotel, right along the Arkansas River in downtown Buena Vista.

Jill got ready with her best friend Sarah in one of the hotel rooms, while Con prepared for the day with his best friend Charlie, who had flown in to be there from LA.

The energy felt calm. Intentional. Excited, but grounded.

Once they were both ready, we stepped outside to the riverside path for their first look. Surrounded by golden cottonwoods and soft afternoon light they saw each other on their elopement day for the first time.

The joy that came from Con the moment he saw Jill was immediate and unfiltered and so joyous.

That moment set the tone for everything that followed.

A Ceremony Above Twin Lakes

From Buena Vista, we drove north toward Twin Lakes as the afternoon light began to soften.

The ceremony location they chose was a quiet overlook along the trail toward Mount Elbert, a spot they had found on their own while scouting.

It required a short hike in, which only added to the experience and is something that makes elopements special.

It gave them space to slow down.
To take it in.
To arrive fully present.

With views stretching across the upper lake and toward Independence Pass, Jill and Con stood together and shared handwritten vows and promises they had created just for each other.

It was emotional, raw, and deeply felt.

With a kiss, and surrounded by everything they love their marriage was sealed.

Champagne, Blue Hour, and Dancing by the Lake

After the ceremony, we made our way back down and drove to the shores of the Upper Twin Lake.

There, they signed their marriage license with Sarah and Charlie as witnesses before opening champagne and celebrating together.

The light shifted into blue hour . A soft, cool, and layered light with color.

Golden aspens scattered across the mountainsides upon the fae shore of the lake.
Snow lightly dusted the peaks above.
And a thin crescent moon appeared overhead as the sun set.

Jill and Con danced along the shoreline, not for the camera, but because they wanted to.

That kind of joy can’t be directed or even planned.

A Celebration That Continued Off Camera

After the sun had fully set, we made our way back to Buena Vista.

They had dinner at Crave, a local Italian spot, before ending the night at The Lariat — a dive bar and music venue where a live band touring from out of town even dedicated a song to them.

While we were off the clock at this point, it felt less like work and more like being part of something real.

That’s always the goal.

Documenting an Intimate Elopement in Twin Lakes, Colorado

From the beginning, Jill and Con wanted something that felt quiet, artistic, and emotionally honest. Something that would give them the space, and time to be themselves and embrace the moments of the day full present.

They didn’t want tradition for tradition’s sake.
They wanted atmosphere.
Connection.
Meaning.

Through both photography and film, the goal was to preserve not just what their day looked like, but what it felt like.

And that feeling lives in the in-between moments.
